The Celebration: Juneteenth

Juneteenth celebrates the final emancipation of enslaved African Americans, commemorating the effective end of slavery with the June 19, 1865 arrival of the Union Army in Galveston Bay, Texas. The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two and a half years earlier, but slavery continued in many states until advancing troops forcibly enacted executive orders ending each state’s slaving practices.

Juneteenth has become a central day for celebrating the African American community, and reflecting on the long road to true freedom.
 
Despite progress, systemic racism and state violence towards Black people remains endemic in America. Cannabis criminalization has been a major tool of oppression, with Black Americans 4x more likely than White Americans to be arrested for cannabis crimes. In recognition of this disparate impact on the Black community, Solstice is focusing its Summer Solstice charity giving around the Juneteenth cause.

The Cause: Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas

Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas is a nonprofit organization solely dedicated to presenting emerging Black arts, artists, and ideas in the Seattle area. We believe in the value of community, creativity, identity and passion. These values serve as our strategic frame and guide day-to-day operations and program decisions. ​

We work out of the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, an ADA-compliant facility rich with culture and history.

The Artist: barry johnson

barry johnson is a self-taught interdisciplinary artist and author that works across all mediums and is known to constantly shift the nature of his work as it reflects the events happening around the world and in his life.

He was one of the artists to contribute to the Black Lives Matter mural in CHOP, is the author of the book “Oh What Wonderful Hair”, and hosts the podcast “Anything is Anything”.
